What actually is Scentwork?

Scentwork is a sport where dogs are taught to locate a specific odour which has been hidden and to indicate its location to their handler.  It uses the same skills as those used by dogs trained to search for illicit items hidden in luggage at airports.

I teach scentwork using the odours of clove, gunoil and truffle oil, which fit with the requirements for most sports competitions. In scentwork classes, dogs are taught basic odour recognition and searching skills along with the indication. Once these foundations have been established then bigger area searches and venue experiences can be enjoyed.

“Pauline is a fantastic instructor”

“Since having to give up gundog work I am training a spaniel to do scentwork with Pauline Whittaker. Such a lovely group of handlers and dogs and I have been made to feel very much part of the group. Pauline is a fantastic instructor and fortunately is also blessed with a good sense of humour.”

Scentwork Classes & Beginners Workshops

Two part beginners workshops are run on Saturday mornings and weekly classes for scentwork skills development are available on Monday daytimes and evenings and Wednesdays and Thursday daytimes. The workshops give you an introduction to Scentwork and the classes are a progression.

These classes are used for:

Developing indication skills

Scentwork UK skills development

Nosework Games style practice and skill development

“Dream Dog”

“When I took on this young delinquent last year I worried that being 70 years his senior and with mobility issues it might have been a foolish rescue. Pauline taught me how to turn him into a 'dream' dog and PWDTS Scentwork in Worcestershire has given us a bonding activity that exercises that massive brain and is such fun too. Thank you Pauline for giving me such a wonderful relationship with my dog and a great new sport.

Venue Searching

Enjoy the thrill of searching some local venues and putting your dog’s skills to the test. Our venues include:

  • Equestrian and Farm Venues

  • Farm Cottages and Barns

  • Local Livestock Farm

  • Sixways Rugby Stadium

  • Worcester Football Club

  • Coach depot

  • School

Once your dogs can recognise their target odour come along to a venue search and develop the skills involved in big area searching. The challenge of ignoring distractions and covering large areas will test and improve both your dog’s skills and your handler skills, as you create a great scent detection team together.

“I highly recommend Pauline”

“We attended a fantastic NNA preparation workshop today, great to be able to learn in a real life situation which can't be created at home and to have feedback as you work is helpful. I would highly recommend Pauline whether a complete beginner or experienced.”

Competitions

From Scentwork UK and Nosework Games held at village Halls through to the big area searches of the National Nosework Competitions, I can help you develop the skills to participate, progress and succeed in the competitive side of this sport. Successful with my own dogs in all of the competition routes and having trained many clients to achieve their goals, I am well prepared to guide you and your dog to success. I am a Judge for all three competition organisations and hold regular trials with my Scentwork team, so opportunities will be plentiful.

“A great experience!”

“I have been working with Pauline for 11 years with my dogs.  Learnt loads, addressed problems and met loads of lovely people. More recently I have been attending Scentwork classes, workshops and trials with my young boy.  It has been excellent for him to build confidence, have fun and tire him out. For me as his handler I have met loads of really lovely people, been to some lovely locations and built up a really great relationship with my boy. Would recommend the journey for all pet dogs and owners. Gives challenges but lots of laughs as well!
